Zig-Zag was designed by MEF University Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture students within the scope of Design & Build! Studio in 2022, as an open-air classroom and playground that supports the physical development as well as cognitive by playing and learning acts of Ahmet Zeki Büyükkuşoğlu Primary School students at the age of 6 to 10 in Dereköy, Bodrum.
The design and construction process continued in an active dialogue with Ahmet Zeki Büyükkuşoğlu Primary School students, parents, and teachers to negotiate a spatial configuration that did not dictate specific play patterns, encouraged children to create different games with their own imagination and activate different muscle groups through activities in the open air such as climbing, running, sliding, sitting, hanging.
With this motivation, the project is formed by permeable surfaces at different levels and slopes, referring to familiar spatial uses such as tunnels, bridges, slides, canopies and amphitheater; yet combined in a common architectural language. This architectural gesture formed structural integrity that triggered different usage scenarios; and the project took its name, Zig-Zag, from these shifts both in the plan and section plane.
Daylight and air circulation of the classrooms facing the project area and easy access to the warehouse located behind the project area were important considerations while shaping the initial design. In addition to these environmental factors, the garden wall behind shaped the project's main layout decisions and axes. Various wooden profiles of 5x15, 5x10, 2.5x10, and 5x5 cm are combined in an interlocked permeable system in different variations and levels to suggest more integrated physical and social relationships. Furthermore, this system provided the necessary secure structural stability for a children's playground and open-air classroom resistant to forces from all directions and levels. Also, it formed the project's dominant architectural language.
Zig-Zag offers different ways of gathering in numerous spatial possibilities while meeting the needs of kindergarten and primary school classes, such as reading books, listening to stories, playing games, moving in the open air and engaging in instructive activities.

Zig-Zag, 2022 yılında MEF FADA Tasarla ve Yap! Stüdyosu kapsamında MEF Üniversitesi Sanat, Tasarım ve Mimarlık Fakültesi öğrencileri tarafından Bodrum’un Dereköy mevkiinde bulunan Ahmet Zeki Büyükkuşoğlu İlköğretim Okulu öğrencilerinin fiziksel gelişimini, oyun ve öğrenme ihtiyacını destekleyen bir açık derslik ve oyun alanı olarak tasarlandı.
Ahmet Zeki Büyükkuşoğlu İlkokulu öğrencileri, velileri ve öğretmenleriyle aktif bir diyalog içinde süren tasarım ve uygulama süreci boyunca 6-10 yaş grubu çocukların açık havada hareket etme, tırmanma, koşma, kayma, oturma, asılma gibi farklı kas gruplarını çalıştıran eylemlerle onları belirli oyun kalıplarına yönlendirmeden kendi hayal güçleriyle farklı oyunlar kurmaya teşvik eden bir mekansal kurgu amaçlandı.
Bu motivasyonla farklı kot yüksekliklerinde ve eğimlerde üretilen yüzeyler tünel, köprü, kaydırak, gölgelik, amfi gibi tanıdık mekansal kullanımlara referans veren; ama ortak bir mimari dilde birleşerek farklı kullanım senaryolarını tetikleyen bir yapısal bütünlük oluşturdu. Proje, Zig-Zag ismini hem plan hem de kesit düzleminde oluşan bu hareketlilikten alıyor.
Projenin tasarımında ve alana yerleşiminde proje alanına bakan sınıfların aldığı gün ışığı ve hava sirkülasyonun engellenmemesi, proje alanının arkasında bulunan depoya erişimin kısıtlanmaması ve bahçe duvarının tanımladığı hat belirleyici rol oynadı. Fiziksel ve sosyal olarak daha geçirgen ilişkiler önermek amacıyla geliştirilen, 5x15, 5x10, 2,5x10 ve 5x5 cm ahşap profillerin birbirine farklı varyasyonlarda ve düzlemlerde geçmesiyle ortaya çıkan yapı, gerekli güvenli strüktürel sabitliği sağlarken projenin hakim mimari dilini de oluşturdu.
Zig-Zag, anasınıfı ve ilkokul sınıflarının açık alanda kitap okuma, hikaye dinleme, oyun kurma, hareket etme, öğretici aktivitelerde bulunma gibi ihtiyaçlarını karşılarken farklı toplanma ve bir araya gelme biçimlerini farklı mekansal olasılıklar içinde sunuyor.
